Out of all the prayer guidance Jesus gives in His sermon on the mount there is only one thing that He goes back to and that is forgiveness. Jesus plainly says that if someone says they’ve been forgiven of their debt against God but are unable to forgive the debt of others against them, then God will neither forgive them. Many christians especially in the reformed circles can feel rather uneasy when they hear about forgiveness being given to someone and then taken away but Jesus doesn’t shy back on making such a statement. Unforgiveness is no small sin, God treats it as a crime worthy of hell, and anyone who professes Christ must avoid the rotten root of unforgiveness and bitterness or they will be bound hand and foot and thrown into the lake of fire.
