We live in a world where people are quick to avenge themselves. If someone takes our money we’ll demand it back. If someone hits us we’ll hit them back. Jesus tells christians that one way our righteousness will exceed the Pharisees is that we will turn the cheek, give to the one who takes, and go the extra mile! The passage is summed up in these words…die to self. The christian is someone who leaves revenge to God, who blesses and prays for their enemies and whose life is characterised by carrying a cross. Jesus loved and prayed for His enemies and we too have to follow in His example.
