In pride Peter thought he was strong in his own strength, which in turn made him vulnerable. It was hurting him to think this way. The Lord knew best and therefore Peter had to go through the trial of denying Christ in order to find out his inability, through being humiliated because of his denial of Christ. Yet during it all God kept Peter and showed His power to keep His own.
